The kit supplies the Mil-Spec carbine receiver extension itself, so no existing buffer tube is needed — a sensible pick if you are building a lower from parts rather than upgrading an assembled rifle. Fitting is ordinary assembly: thread the extension in, fit the end plate and castle nut, torque and stake the nut, then drop in the buffer and spring. A castle-nut wrench is required.

Just a stripped or complete AR-15/M4 lower with the standard threaded rear, because the kit supplies the Mil-Spec carbine receiver extension itself along with the buffer, action spring, castle nut and QD end plate. No existing buffer tube is needed. It is a sensible pick if you are building a lower from parts rather than upgrading an assembled rifle.
This Mod 1 stock has a watertight storage compartment in the body, which the Mod 0 SOPMOD kit does not. That is useful if you want a battery or small spares carried on the gun and kept dry. Otherwise both kits share the same complete hardware set and the SOPMOD-style cheek weld.
It is ordinary assembly rather than gunsmithing: thread the receiver extension in, fit the end plate and castle nut, torque and secure the nut, then drop in the buffer and spring. A castle nut wrench and a way of holding the lower steady are the main requirements. If you would rather not torque the nut yourself, a gunsmith will do it quickly.
The kit is available in Black and Flat Dark Earth.
