The human eye is most sensitive to green light, so a green reticle reads as brighter than a red one driven at the same power — which means it stands out better against a sunlit background or a pale wall, and it can be run at a lower brightness setting the rest of the time. Shooters who find a red dot smears or starbursts sometimes get a cleaner point of aim from green, though that varies from person to person and is worth testing rather than assuming. The trade is battery: a green emitter draws more current, so quoted runtimes are typically shorter than the red equivalent of the same model, and solar failsafe panels earn their keep here.
